Began auditioning seriously at the age of 17 and joined KOZ Entertainment after passing their open audition held in Wonju. He was the first trainee of the company and debuted after 3 years and 9 months of training.

During his audition, he performed Maroon 5's 'Sunday Morning' with a guitar. When asked to take off his glasses during the audition, he received a surprised reaction, 'Oh my, take off your bangs too!'
